ACT vs SAT. Which test should I take?

I am going to be a senior in high school. I iwll soon be applying to colleges and universities. I have to take an important test soon. The test will determine whether I will be accepted to college or not. I am a bit confused though. ACT vs SAT. Which test should I take? Should I take both tests, or should I check with the colleges to see which one of the two they require? Do some colleges and universities prefer one over the other? What is the difference between the two?
