Where do you go

I have been told that you leave your body when you sleep and that dreaming is a projection of the trip. When I hear things like this I really wonder where a person does go when they do an astral projection and if it only happens when you are asleep, how can you keep a record of it to compare to past and future experiences. Do you meet other people who are on an astral journey and has anyone ever linked up later with one of those. Do you end up in astral chat room with total strangers or do you end up in a family room with old friends and family?
