Training Your Dog

Training your dog is important so that they understand how you, the owner, want them to behave.  The owner is generally the best person to take on the responsibility of dog training, as they need to learn to communicate with their pet.  On the other side, the owner must learn how to read and interpret signals from the pet, the dog may be confused or unsure of what behavior is required.

One of the most important things to remember is to use consistent signals or words when training your dog, if you vary the commands you may confuse your pet.  When the dog follows your commands and gets everything right, you should consider positive reinforcement, such as a special treat.  If you catch your dog doing something he is not supposed to, you must correct him immediately so he will relate the punishment to what he has done.  For example, if he goes to the bathroom inside your home and you find it later it will do little good to punish the dog because he may not understand what he has done wrong.  Punishment should be consistent with the type of pet you have, for many dogs the word no in a sharp tone will be punishment enough to discourage future bad behavior.

Good luck training your pet!
