What is the cause of gout?

My mother recently told me that she was in the middle of an attack of gout and it was very painful, so she didn’t want to go out. What is the cause of gout? Is there anything she can do to make it less likely that she will have another attack of gout? I hate to hear about her suffering, whatever the cause. Is there anything she can do to make it less painful if she should have another attack of gout? This time I think she is just taking some over the counter pain medication since she didn’t want to take anything stronger.
