Reading through the comments here, however, it is clear that many in this country do find this offensive. Thus, the question is: do moderate Muslims CARE that many find it offensive? If their goal setting theory is to rehabilitate the public perception of Islam as they state that it is, then placing a mosque at ground zero is exactly the wrong thing to do. It will not offend people like you, but then you probably don’t harbor any suspicions towards moderate Islam anyway, thus they do not need to rehabilitate the impression that you have of them.

Rather, they are trying to rehabilitate their image in the eyes of the people who harbor suspicions that if push came to shove, moderate Muslims would prefer to harbor and protect their extremist bretheren rather than expose them in order to protect our national community.
