Just what IS a culture of innovation?

November 7th, 2009 by admin

I keep reading articles about creating a “culture of innovation.” I’ve been wondering for awhile just what it means. It’s a great expression – but what would that mean for our company, and for me? My supervisor recently took our team on an off-site. The topic was “innovation.” He had lots of great things to say. But at one point I asked him, “Just HOW do we do this? You talk about generating lots of fresh, new ideas – but how? We have jobs to do. We have assigned responsibilities, individually and as a team. How do we do it?” He got a little annoyed, I think, mostly because he didn’t have an answer. I suspect his boss initiated this whole innovation thing, and he was doing his job. I spent some time on the Internet researching this. And what I realized is that if you want to build a cathedral, you need tools. You can have the best plans in the world – but without a hammer, saw, screwdriver, etc, you will never build it. A “culture of innotation” starts at the foundation – with real world innovation tools. Keep piling brick on to of brick, and eventually you’ve created a monument.
