How do these loans work?

A friend of mine was recently telling me that I should get a cash loan to help me pay some of my expenses since I need to purchase a lot of books and things for school, and I have been having a hard time coming up with enough money. I am wondering how cash loans work. Where can I get one? What can I use the money for? How much is the interest? What kind of terms are involved? How fast would I have to pay it off? Does anyone know anything about these loans that they could tell me?
