Legal Downloads

I have only used a downloading service once for music and I am quite embarrassed to say that was some time ago. It was all free music and I even think that the website that sponsored it had a heck of time with all the legal trouble for giving away free music. Since then I have been a bit cautious of downloading any music because I do not want to break the law. What is the case now with Ares free music downloads? Is it totally legal to do so and all the bands know they their music is on the Internet for free?
