The Black Hills National Forest is an incredibly beautiful, though seemingly unlikely area. The mountains seem to spring straight from the plains and are unconnected with the Rockies to the west. In fact, these are the oldest mountains in North America and once stood thousands of feet taller. Still, the peaks crest above 7,000 feet in elevation, making them an impressive sight, indeed. There are numerous attractions in Black Hills National Forest. Perhaps the largest is the chance to view the Crazy Horse Monument. This enormous sculpture is still being blasted from the living rock of the Hills and is enormously impressive, as well as culturally important. In addition, visitors will find a number of great things in the park.Jagged granite peaks offer challenge to rock climbers, while numerous trails offer hikers, campers and backpackers the chance to explore a pristine wilderness. Even history buffs can find something to do in the Hills. The enormous amount of Indian history, as well as white history is impressive. The relatively small impact human activity has had on the Hills is also impressive. Enjoy the beauty of the area, kayak, swim, hike and learn about the incredible power of nature in this stunning park.
